1) Wash or dry shampoo your scalp and hair.
When washing with shampoo, make sure to scrub the scalp for improved circulation and to remove impurities. It is not healthy to wash your hair everyday, especially if you have color treated hair. Over washing can dry out your hair and fade the color. Try a dry shampoo if you don't want to completely restyle your hair.
2) Condition your hair.
This is such an important step. Sometimes I like to rinse my hair- skipping the shampoo and use conditioner for a day or two in between washes. This gives my scalp and hair a break from overcleansing.
3) More Moisture.
Leave-in conditioners and heat protectants are layered into damp hair. This will give the hair a barrier against heat, environmental toxins, and a barrier against humidity, a major issue we have here in Humboldt County. Use your fingers, wide tooth comb, or a wetbrush to evenly saturate hair.
4) Style.
Add any styling products and air dry, or style with a blowdryer. Styling products can make or break a style. Your stylist will have lots of recommendations that will assist you in choosing a styling product that will help you create the look you desire.
5) Finishing.
This is almost as important as the styling. Texture spray, wax, finishing hairspray, dry oil spray... all these things will help bring to life all the texture that has been cut, sliced, and razored into your haircut. Using one or more of these products will bring out the personality of your hairstyle.
